AMG prepares to celebrate it’s golden anniversary in 2017

For almost 50 years, AMG has represented the pinnacle of automotive performance and luxury.
Born out of a small workshop in Grossaspach, Germany, by engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the historic Mercedes-Benz nameplate has long targeted a discerning set of drivers who want it all.
And as the desires of those drivers have evolved, so has AMG, with 33 per cent growth in worldwide sales last year. Canada, per capita, is emerging as one of the strongest markets for the luxury nameplate.
“The defining goal of AMG, to this day, is to create that perfect blend of luxury and performance,” says Carey Bymoen, AMG product specialist at Lone Star Mercedes-Benz in Calgary, noting despite uncertainty in the energy sector, Lone Star sold a record 27 AMG vehicles in June.
AMG’s history dates back to the mid-1960s when Aufrecht and Melcher first tuned up a 300SE that legendary driver Manfred Schiek later took to win 10 rounds of the 1965 German Touring Car Championship. (AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher and Grossaspach, which is where Aufrecht was born.)
Mercedes-Benz, at the time, was transitioning out of European racing, instead wanting to focus on manufacturing faster vehicles for both the road and track. It caught wind of Aufrecht and Melcher’s success and formed a partnership that continues to this day.
Mercedes-Benz purchased AMG in 1999 but kept it a separate entity. Bymoen says this is important because it lets AMG’s tradition for embracing power and opulence permeate throughout the parent company’s entire lineup.
“What you’ve seen in the last five to six years, especially, is a lot more AMG features throughout Mercedes-Benz,” says Bymoen, noting the parent brand’s once understated luxury is now being influenced by AMG’s sporty, aggressive and stylish approach, such as the new C-Class, which captured 2015 World Car of the Year.
“When you get into these cars and see how well they are made, you’ll realize AMG just offers such immense value,” says Bymoen.
